What is passthrough on a VR headset, and when is it useful for training?

Passthrough lets a compatible headset display a camera view of the surrounding physical space. A mixed reality application can combine that view with digital elements. For training, the useful question is whether seeing the room or selected physical objects helps the learner complete a particular exercise.

Choose the teaching purpose first

An exercise might place a virtual item beside a real training station or provide instructions around a demonstration object. A fully virtual environment may be more suitable when the purpose is to practise a different location. Passthrough is a design choice rather than a requirement for every project.

Allow for the headset and room

The appearance of the camera view and available interaction features vary by device and application. Test the proposed task on the intended hardware, with the lighting, layout and space expected at the venue. Do not assume that a camera view gives the same perception as normal vision.

Keep the exercise controlled

Seeing a representation of the room does not make it appropriate to use dangerous equipment while wearing a headset. Plan a clear training area and follow device guidance. Physical props, movement and supervision need to be assessed for the particular task.

Discuss your project with High5VR

High5VR can help compare a fully virtual exercise with a passthrough concept. A short demonstration of the intended interaction can settle the design more effectively than choosing a feature from a specification sheet.
