What artwork, characters and sound does a VR game need?

A VR game’s artwork, characters and sound should help players understand and enjoy the activity. Start with the actions and information the game needs, then create an asset list. Detailed scenery is not a substitute for readable interaction.

List the visual assets

Identify the environment, objects, interface and characters needed for the first version. Decide which items are interactive and which are background. Assets must be suitable for the intended headset and agreed visual style.

Plan feedback and sound

Players need to recognise a successful action, a changed state and an available next step. Sound can support that feedback and establish atmosphere. Voice acting, music and audio rights need to be included if required.

Allow for testing and revision

A design that looks good in a still image may be hard to use in a headset. High5VR can help plan an asset and production scope around the game’s first playable version, with additional content reviewed separately.

Costs depend on the agreed scope, development and asset work, any filming days, crew, equipment and post-production. A focused project can be inexpensive; undefined future features need to be reviewed separately.
