Can VR help staff practise a shift handover?

VR can add a handover exercise in which staff identify important information and explain what the next team needs to know. The value comes from the details in the scenario: an unresolved fault, a changed instruction or a task that is incomplete. A trainer can then explore what was communicated and what was missed.

Build the scene around a real handover process

Use the organisation’s approved structure for passing on information. Choose a manageable situation and identify the facts that affect the next shift. A scene filled with unrelated hazards can distract from the communication skill the exercise is meant to practise.

Make observation part of the exercise

A filmed workplace or a modelled environment can contain clues for the learner to notice. Ask them to prepare a handover, choose priorities or explain their next steps. The interaction and any recorded answers must be agreed during development.

Review clarity as well as completeness

After the exercise, discuss what the receiving colleague would understand. Was the outstanding task clear? Was responsibility explained? Would the next person know where to find further information? Use the approved procedure to guide the feedback.

High5VR works with professional trainers at Bhuku on appropriate training projects. Trainer involvement and responsibilities are agreed for each project.

Discuss your project with High5VR

High5VR can discuss handover content for a specific workplace. The exercise should support practical supervision and existing operating procedures, with confidential details removed from the production brief.
