High5VR is deep in development on Sammy Rambles and the Floating Circus—an ambitious immersive VR movie based on the original book by J. T. Scott.
This is far more than an animated film viewed through a VR headset. The production is being created using fully animated VR characters, magical virtual environments and voice performances from a large cast of children and adults.
Most importantly, the entire adventure will be experienced through the eyes of Sammy Rambles.
The audience will not simply watch Sammy’s journey from the outside. They will become Sammy—standing inside each scene, looking naturally in every direction and experiencing the mysterious Floating Circus as the story unfolds around them.
Is this a world first?
VR films and animated immersive experiences have been created before. For example, Miyubi, released in 2017, placed viewers inside its story through the eyes of a toy robot, while animated VR productions such as Allumette also demonstrated the potential of immersive storytelling.
Because earlier examples exist, it would not be accurate to describe Sammy Rambles and the Floating Circus simply as “the world’s first VR film.”
However, its combination of a first-person viewpoint, a feature-style children’s adventure, an extensive cast of fully animated VR characters, professional voice performances and a story adapted directly from a published book makes it a genuinely pioneering production—and potentially one of the first VR movies of its kind.
You Are Sammy Rambles
Unlike a traditional film, there is no screen separating the audience from the adventure.
When another character speaks to Sammy, they are speaking directly to you.
When something appears behind Sammy, you can turn around and see it.
When Sammy enters the extraordinary Floating Circus, you will be standing inside it—surrounded by its characters, sounds, colour and magic.
The film follows Sammy as he embarks on an incredible journey and discovers a mysterious floating world filled with wonder, humour, friendship, adventure and larger-than-life personalities.
It is a completely different way to experience a story:
- Become the main character instead of simply watching them
- Explore every environment in full 360-degree immersion
- Meet animated characters who speak directly to you
- Experience events as they happen all around you
- Feel present inside the story rather than watching it on a screen
This is not a conventional film converted into VR. It is being conceived, written and produced specifically for virtual reality from the very beginning.
Bringing the Characters to Life
The movie will feature a large cast of virtual characters, each brought to life through animation and individual voice performances.
The principal and supporting roles include:
- Sammy Rambles
- Dixie Deane
- Darius Murphy
- Sir Ragnarok
- Commander Altair
- Dr Shivers
- Mrs Grock
- Professor Sanchez
- Numerous additional male and female supporting characters
Hundreds of children and adults have already submitted auditions for the different parts, creating a huge—and exciting—job for the production team as they listen to the performances and begin matching voices to characters.
Successful actors will not appear physically on camera. Their voices will become the personalities of the animated characters who inhabit Sammy’s extraordinary world.
Writing a Movie Without a Camera
Jenny and Hannah are currently working closely together to craft the screenplay, but writing a first-person VR movie presents challenges that simply do not exist in ordinary filmmaking.
In a traditional movie, a director decides exactly where the audience looks by choosing the camera angle and cutting between shots. In VR, the viewer can look anywhere at any moment.
That means every scene must be carefully planned to ensure the audience naturally notices important characters and story events without feeling as though they are being forced to look in a particular direction.
Every part of the production must be considered differently:
- Where each character stands and how they move
- How the audience’s attention is guided around a 360-degree environment
- How characters speak to and interact with Sammy
- How scenes change without breaking the feeling of presence
- How movement is kept comfortable for people wearing a headset
- How spatial sound directs attention to events happening nearby
- How Sammy’s movements and reactions are communicated without showing his face
- What is happening beside, above and even behind the viewer
There is no empty space beyond the edge of the camera. The entire world surrounding the viewer must be designed, built, animated, lit and filled with sound.
If several characters are present, their movements, expressions and conversations must remain believable from every possible viewing direction. A viewer may watch the main action, turn to examine the circus or notice a small character reacting in the background. The world must continue to feel alive wherever they choose to look.
That makes the project part film, part animation and part immersive experience—with each discipline having to work together perfectly.
Based on the Original World of J. T. Scott
The production is being built from the foundations of J. T. Scott’s original story and its unforgettable collection of characters, locations and adventures.
The first film will introduce audiences to Sammy Rambles and the Floating Circus, but this is only the beginning of a much larger series.

The Next Evolution of Storytelling
Research into cinematic VR describes the powerful feeling of being surrounded by a virtual world as “presence”—the sensation that you have been transported into another place. Studies have also explored how first-person VR can increase emotional involvement by placing the viewer inside the narrative rather than leaving them outside it. That is exactly what Sammy Rambles and the Floating Circus is setting out to achieve.
This is not just a film.
It is an invitation to step into Sammy’s shoes, enter a living, breathing world and experience an unforgettable adventure from the inside.
More development, casting and production updates will be revealed as we move closer to bringing the Floating Circus to life.
